Construction phases

We need to continually operate, maintain and develop New Zealand's transmission network - the National Grid - to ensure we meet the ongoing electricity needs of New Zealanders.

Our Karapiro substation is an important part of transmission supply for both Te Awamutu and Hinuera substations

What are we doing

Transpower has a significant work programme at Karapiro to replace equipment and rationalise how circuits are connected and terminated within the facility.  Due to the nature of supply from this substation - the construction phase will allow for a staged equipment removal and replacement process.  This means that the impact on substations supplied by this facility - like Hinuera will be reduced during construction over 2020 and 2021. More information on the process can be found here.

Will there by an impact on my power supply

For those supplied by our Hinuera substation (so including Matamata, Tirau and Putaruru) there are two scheduled day long outages needed to complete our project:

  • 2 May 2021 (7:30am to 6:00pm)
  • 13 June 2021 (duration TBC)

We have worked to find times that are least impacting for the community, but appreciate there is never a good time for an outage.  Keep up to date with the progress of these outages on the day on Facebook.
